Why a white rabbit, why letters, and why I believe the big questions all lead back to the same place.

Dear reader,

In 1865, Lewis Carroll sent a girl down a rabbit hole for no better reason than curiosity. More than a century later, a film borrowed the same rabbit to ask whether the world we're shown is the whole of it.

I have carried the words follow the white rabbit with me for years. To me they have never meant chasing the strangest idea I can find. They mean being curious enough to follow a question all the way down, and honest about what I find at the bottom.

And what I keep finding at the bottom of the big questions, about government, faith, money and power, is people. Ordinary people, in every country and every creed, who want much the same things: to be safe, to be free, to be treated fairly, and to leave something good behind.

The easiest thing in the world is to divide them. Us and them is simple, it sells, and it is everywhere. These papers try to do the harder thing: to look at the big picture with conscience, to question ideas and systems without forgetting the humans inside them, and to start from the belief that we are one human race.

I won't always be right. When I'm wrong, I would rather say so than dig in.

Every letter here is typed on paper first. What you're reading is a copy; the original sits in a box, uneditable, exactly as I wrote it. If something here stirs you, in agreement or otherwise, write back.

Yours,

H.
